About Us

We at Adrian & Associates are public relations generalists. We’ve worked in most PR disciplines, including programming, opinion research, corporate identity, employee communications, investor relations, special events and crisis communications. Our forte is media relations.

We’ve also worked with a variety of clients in several industries, including public institutions, nonprofit organizations, and privately and publicly held businesses, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies (see Client Experience). Our most extensive experience is with automotive suppliers, technology companies and institutions, nonprofit organizations and law firms.

On their behalf, we’ve collaborated with an equally wide variety of other communicators, including advertising agencies, market researchers, graphic designers, photographers, videographers and website developers. We’re fully capable of managing your integrated communications program.

David Adrian David J. Adrian, founder and president of Adrian & Associates, is a former journalist and a senior public relations counselor with four decades of experience as a communicator. As a PR counselor, he has served in a variety of executive positions with several agencies: AutoCom Associates, Durocher-Dixson-Werba, Franco Public Relations, Stone August Baker Communications and R.J. Baker Advertising. He also co-founded and served as chief executive officer of Adrian & Peterson.

During his career as a journalist, David was managing editor of Air Conditioning News, assistant city editor of the Oakland Press, city editor of the Fenton Independent and a staff writer at the Wyandotte News-Herald. He holds a B.A. from Saginaw Valley State University. His business and professional memberships include the Public Relations Society of America and the Association of the United States Army.

David Adrian is president of Individual Communicators Network (www.icnpr.net), a nonprofit business corporation whose members are senior communicators with their own practices who work together as a team on major client projects, most recently the prestigious International Wheel Awards and Michigan Excellence in Journalism Competition for the Detroit Press Club Foundation. No public relations or marketing communications agency in Michigan has a corps of senior executives with more talent and experience than the members of ICN.

The simplest definition of public relations, devised by Edward Bernays, one of the profession’s founding fathers, is “engineering public consent”. If you don’t engineer (guide, manage, modify or construct) the consent (acquiescence, compliance, agreement or approval) of your publics, other people or organizations will.

PR shouldn’t be your only communications tool, of course. As Abraham Maslow observed, “If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.” However, PR should play a leading role—if not the leading role—in your overall communications program, including advertising.

Our Work

As we’ve said, we’re public relations generalists. We’ve worked in most PR disciplines, including programming, opinion research, corporate identity, employee communications, investor relations, special events and crisis communications. Our fortes are media relations and special events.

We’ve also worked with a variety of clients in several industries, including public institutions, nonprofit organizations, and privately and publicly held businesses, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies (click here for client experience).

Legal Aid and Defender Association – We’ve served Detroit-based Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD), the largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents of Michigan, for several years, especially in the area of media relations, including publicity and crisis communications. We’ve generated extensive publicity for LAD in the news media in metropolitan Detroit, including the legal press, daily and weekly newspapers, and news radio and television, through news releases, interviews and news conferences. The latest news conference featured U.S. Rep. John Conyers, Jr. and James L. Sandman, president of the federal Legal Services Corporation (LSC), announcing a major technology grant from LSC. Detroit Press Club Foundation – We led a team from Individual Communicators Network [hyperlink name] that helped the Detroit Press Club Foundation reinstate its Michigan Excellence in Journalism Competition for professional and college journalists throughout the state. The project included developing the categories and criteria for the competition; recruiting a panel of judges from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University; developing a media database and soliciting entries from journalists; planning and conducting an awards ceremony; and publicizing the results of the competition in the news media throughout Michigan. The next step would be an engagement to plan and execute a program. Naturally, we’d welcome such an opportunity.
